GRESHAM, Ore. – The City of Gresham and new team owners Jerry and Lisa Walker announced that Gresham will host a West Coast League (WCL) collegiate summer baseball team beginning in 2016. The team will play its home games at Mt. Hood Community College.
“We are proud to welcome the West Coast League to Gresham,” Gresham mayor Shane Bemis said. “This league will bring a fun and affordable family friendly activity to our community and I am excited to see kids and families at the games cheering on Gresham’s team.”
Jerry and Lisa Walker – the team’s new owners – bring a wealth of experience in baseball ownership to Gresham. The two owned Minor League Baseball’s Bellingham Giants / Mariners in Bellingham, Wash. – a current WCL city – before moving the team to Keizer, Ore. The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League have been a staple in Oregon’s professional sports landscape since 1997, playing home games at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, a stadium which the owners helped build. The Walkers also own the Klamath Falls Gems who competed in the WCL through the 2015 season.
“Lisa and I join the entire WCL, City of Gresham, Mt. Hood Community College and area fans in celebrating this next chapter in community-based, family friendly, championship-caliber baseball,” Jerry Walker said.
The name of the team will be determined through a community-wide name-the-team contest. Fans are encouraged to immediately begin submitting ideas for the team’s name to email@example.com.
The team is also taking season ticket priority list members and marketing and sponsorship opportunities via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The 2016 WCL season is set to get underway in June.
