GreyWolves unable to hold early lead, fall 9-6 in series finale

GRESHAM, Ore. – For a second straight night, the Gresham GreyWolves offense had its way with the opposing pitching staff. But unfortunately for Gresham (11-7, 22-23 overall), those results at the plate didn’t add up to a win against the visiting Kitsap BlueJackets.

Using one of its best offensive performances of the season, Kitsap (7-14, 15-33) put up nine runs for a second straight game to top the GreyWolves, 9-6. In addition to winning the game, the victory also sealed the deal on a series win for the BlueJackets.

The evening couldn’t have started better for Gresham as the team jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind single runs in all of the first three innings. Ben Klenke (Nebraska) and Josh Adams (UC Santa Barbara) both recorded RBIs to extend their club’s early lead, while Dylan Doherty (Cal Poly) scored the contest’s first run off an error by the defense’s center fielder.

Kitsap soon hit the comeback trail in grand fashion, plating five runs in a fourth inning where multiple things went awry for Justin Barchus’ team. The defensive mistakes didn’t deter the team at the plate, though, as the GreyWolves struck right back for three runs in the home half of the fifth inning.

It was Mark Cardinalli (UC Davis) that came up with a huge two-RBI triple to tie the game in that fifth frame, paving the way for another RBI knock from Adams to give Gresham the lead right back at 6-5.

That lead would ultimately prove to be short-lived as the BlueJackets plated three runs in the seventh and another in the top of the ninth to grab a 9-6 advantage. The GreyWolves then went down quietly in the last of the ninth, putting a sour finish on a game that was full of fireworks.

Kitsap reliever Brian Howell (1-0) was credited with the win in his first appearance for the BlueJackets despite giving up three runs in just over two innings of work.

The GreyWolves will look to bounce back from their second series loss of the second half this weekend against the Bend Elks. The series in Bend will start on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m.
