GRESHAM, Ore. – Starter Gabe Benavides (Grand Canyon) threw seven-plus innings of shutout baseball, Konnor Zickefoose (Chapman) and Will Matthiessen (West Linn HS/Stanford) had multi-RBI nights, and the Gresham GreyWolves put up 14 hits against the Bend Elks in an 8-6 loss on Friday night.
Eager to get the taste of a recent sweep out of their mouth, Gresham (13-12, 24-28 overall) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead against the visitors from Central Oregon. A two-RBI double off the bat of Zickefoose gave the GreyWolves a 2-0 lead after the first inning, and the team added one more run in the next frame thanks to an RBI single from Mark Cardinalli.
Justin Barchus’ team then doubled that three-run advantage in the third, plating three runs on four hits. Matthiessen had the biggest hit of the inning, a two-RBI double that scored Southern Illinois’ teammates Ryan Smith and Drew Curtis. Matthiessen would then score the game’s sixth run soon thereafter, being brought in on an RBI double from Jordan Barchus (Lower Columbia).
Benavides was able to work comfortably for four more innings with a 6-0 cushion, but unfortunately for the left-hander, his bullpen was unable to hold the lead.
The two teams will return to action Saturday night as Gresham looks to pull even in the final series of the year. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Oslund Field.
