Gresham, OR — There’s no better way to celebrate opening day in Division 1 baseball than to welcome three more players to the Gresham GreyWolves for the 2017 summer! We welcome two players from St. Mary’s College in Moraga California, and one returning arm from nearby St. Martins University.
Jackson Thoreson (Catcher/1st Baseman) – Junior – St. Mary’s
The GreyWolves gather a rare commodity in Jackson Thoreson; a solid defensive catcher, who can hit in the middle of the lineup this summer for the GreyWolves. Thoreson is one of four St. Mary’s players that will make the trip up to Gresham this summer, and coach Barchus couldn’t be happier “St. Mary’s is a huge connection for us to make as a program; coach Valenzuela has done a phenomenal job in quick order down there, and is building a program that is going to be at the top end of that league for a long time”. Thoreson Made 44 appearances and 35 starts as a first basemen for SMC as a sophomore … With 128 at bats, racked up 33 hits, 24 RBI’s and three homeruns … Recorded his first homerun of the season against Central Michigan on Feb. 26 and hit another one out of the park during a West Coast Conference Tournament win against Gonzaga on May 28 … Finished the year with five doubles and nine walks … Racked up 282 putouts with only five errors leading to a .983 fielding percentage … Recorded an on base percentage of .314 and a slugging percentage of .367. He hit .317 as a freshman for the Gaels. Jackson will provide pop in the middle of the order, and leadership behind the plate. Two things that are mandatory for a winning campaign in 2017.
Ryan Novis (Outfielder) — Freshman – St. Mary’s
Along with Thoreson, the GreyWolves picked up one of the top recruits in the state of Arizona for the 2017 season. A 2016 class member at Corona Del Sol High School in Tempe, Ariz. … Novis batted .500 as a junior in 2015 with 55 hits, 14 doubles and 18 RBIs … Named to MaxPreps.com’s Junior All-American Team in 2015 … Placed on the 2015 All-Arizona First Team … Also named to the 2015 All-USA Arizona High School Baseball Team … Earned Arizona Interscholastic Association Division I First Team honors. Ryan is most well-known for his offense, and his ability to play multiple positions on defense “Some kids just have a knack for hitting the baseball hard, and Ryan has shown that over his career, it’s going to be no different this spring and summer. He’s so good offensively they’re trying to use him at multiple positions as a freshman just to get his bat in the lineup. He’s going to be a very valuable piece to our club this summer”. Ryan was rated the 2nd best outfielder in the state of Arizona by Perfect Game for the 2016 season.
Mickey Walker (Right Handed Pitcher) – Sophomore – St. Martin’s
The GreyWolves will no doubt get a top of the rotation arm in Mickey Walker when he shows up in Gresham this summer. Walker was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2016, and was signed on to be a part of last year’s GreyWolves club until his innings pitched shut him down for the summer… he posted the team’s best ERA (4.56), most innings pitched (75.0), most strikeouts (59), lowest opponent average (.281), most saves (3), and more complete games (4) than the rest of the team combined… ranked top 10 in the conference in ERA, opponent average, innings pitched, strikeouts, saves, and appearances… had five starts of 7.0 innings, all of which he limited the opponent to three or less earned runs… finished his freshman campaign with a career-best eight-strikeout performance at Montana State Billings… In high school, over three years of varsity baseball, Walker was handed a losing decision just once in conference play… posted a 0.98 ERA as a senior with six earned runs in 43 innings in league play… tossed five complete games including two complete game shutouts… had a streak of 21 innings without allowing a run and a streak of 24 innings without walking a batter… All-State selection as a junior and senior while being named Salem Area Athlete of the Year in 2015… three-time conference Pitcher of the Year selection. This isn’t coach Barchus’ first time coaching Mickey over the years “I’ve had Mickey on my team a few times; he’s an easy going kid, but when he picks up the ball he can flip a switch to the most competitive guy on your team. He takes his job very seriously, and it’ll be interesting to see what role Mickey is used in this summer since he plays such a big role at St. Martins. One way or another he’ll be a big part of the pitching staff”.
