Gresham OR. — Check out the three newest players from the University of Portland that are taking the 20 minute drive out to Gresham for the summer!
Matt Carrigg (Right Handed Pitcher) – Freshman – Portland
The GreyWolves couldn’t be more excited about the pedigree of their newest Portland Pilot. Not only is Matt an outstanding right-handed pitcher, but he has an outstanding history as an overall athlete/hitter as well. Matt was a four-year letterwinner for his high school squad … a three-time All-Central California Conference selection and a 2015 all-district pick, Carrigg holds the school record in on-base percentage (.624) and walks (18) … also led his team in batting average (.493), runs (34) and ERA (1.11) as a junior… hit .443 his senior year … helped lead the team to the league championship in 2015 and he’s a three-time conference all-academic selection … Sacramento Rivercats All-City Team in 2015 … nabbed MVP honors at the Modesto Sunrise Rotary’s 26th Annual All-Star Game … belted the game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Gregori High School in the 2015 district playoffs … also lettered in football and was the team captain at quarterback … Pitman HS Scholar Athlete Award in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Coach Barchus looks forward to getting such a great athlete in Carrigg “I really think the best pitchers are outstanding athletes, and Matt fits that mold. We’re excited to get a team captain and quarterback in high school, so he knows how to lead and control the game… and he’s an outstanding talent on top of that. Who knows, maybe he’ll find some AB’s this summer, if he hit almost .500 in high school he must be able to swing it a little bit”. One thing is for sure, Carrigg’s live arm is going to turn heads at Oslund Field this summer.
Christian Peters (Right Handed Pitcher) — Freshman – Portland
Tall right hander Christian Peters will be featured on a pitching mound near you this June. Another arm getting valuable experience according to coach Barchus “Christian has a Tuesday start and multiple appearances out of the pen this spring, we’re going to look to Christian for some big innings this summer. I have no doubt he’s going to be an important asset to our pitching staff”. Peters was a four-year letterman for the Tigers in high school… two-time selection to the all-state team (2015 & 2016) and he landed on the all-area team as a junior … during his senior campaign, he led the league in home runs (4) and wins (9); he also tossed a no-hitter and fanned 12 in a game to help lead the team to the Round of 16 at the state playoffs … in 2015, he helped the Tigers win the Washington 2A State Championship by leading the league in both wins (6) and batting average (.423) … named the Evergreen Conference Player of the Year in 2016, was a first-team all-conference pick in 2015, and he was named second-team all-conference as a sophomore … earned league all-academic all four years … the Tigers won a league title in 2015 and claimed the district crown in 2014 … also starred on the hoops court, earning all-conference twice … holds the school record for most three’s in a season and in a playoff game … class valedictorian.
Connor Knutson (Right Handed Pitcher) – Freshman – Portland
Last, but surely not least coming from the Bluff this summer is slender right hander Connor Knutson. Connor has been efficient for the Pilots this season, only giving up runs in two of his six appearances… he sports a 7.50 ERA, and a 4/1 K/BB ratio. Coach Barchus thinks the early season work will pay off “Connor is going to be a valuable arm that may see multiple roles for us this spring. The fact that he’s getting innings out of the pen as a true freshman shows he’s definitely in Portland’s plans over the next couple years. That experience is going to pay off come summer time”.
