A lot of GreyWolves fans will recognize the name Drew Curtis from the 2016 Gresham squad. In his first season with the Wolves Drew hit .227 with seven doubles, a home run, and 18 RBI’s. Drew came on strong at the end of the summer, batting .412 in his last eight games, coach Barchus hopes he can carry that over to this summer “Drew is a great personality to have around, and what he brings for us defensively is huge. Last summer he missed half of the college season with a shoulder injury, and struggled a little early since he hadn’t seen a ton of AB’s during the spring. Once he got going he was a big part of our late season run offensively, and I think that’s more of a reflection on the type of player he really is. We’re excited to have him back”. Drew played in 22 games and started 19 last spring for Southern Illinois… All 19 starts came at designated hitter … He drew 17 walks and had a .400 on-base percentage … Reached base safely in 16 of 19 starts … Went 3-for-7 with a double, RBI and three runs scored vs. Missouri State … Hit a home run against Jacksonville State … Had multi-hit games against Dallas Baptist, Illinois State and Missouri State. This spring Drew is batting .261 with a double and four walks. We look forward to seeing Drew back in the black and gold this summer!
Ben Slattery (Right Handed Pitcher) — Redshirt Freshman – Pepperdine
Ben Slattery also comes from the Midwest, but calls the sunny beaches of Malibu home this spring. The redshirt freshman has previous summer league experience, in the Jayhawk League last summer. He went 1-1 in 15 appearances and posted a 4.86 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched, with 21 K’s. This spring he has continued to show improvement for the Waves; holding a 1.93 ERA in 5 appearances. Coach Barchus is excited to add Ben to the staff this summer “From all accounts Ben has done nothing but continue to improve since he showed up at Pepperdine, and I expect that trend to continue this summer. He’s a guy that can eat up innings, and get a lot of outs. He’ll be used in multiple roles this summer, and we’re excited to have a few Pepperdine guys around”.
Jake Palmer (Outfielder) – Incoming Freshman – UC Irvine
One of the top recruits in the UC Irvine 2017 class is heading up to Gresham this summer, and his deadly offensive production will come with him. In Jake’s junior year at El Segundo high school, he hit .398 with 32 runs scored, 8 doubles, and an astounding 28 stolen bases. Since he’s signed on to UC Irvine, you might think he’s going to just coast through his senior year… you’d be incorrect. So far this spring, in 66 plate appearances, Jake is batting .648 with 23 RBI, 7 doubles, a triple, and three home runs. He also has 8 more stolen bases. In his four year varsity career Jake has struck out a total of 21 times… in 437 plate appearances. Coach Barchus envisions good things from this young player “His stats speak for themselves, but what I like most about him is his leadership ability. He’s the quarterback on the football team, and from all accounts he carries that leadership over to the diamond. When talking to coaches you find a lot of these talented high school kids have great stats, but coaches will tell you if they think the kid will transfer over to the speed of the game at the college level. Jake is one of those guys that will transfer over very well, and I think everyone at Irvine is pretty excited for Jake to bring his skills down there next year, and we’re just as excited to have him on our side this summer”.
