GreyWolves win series vs. Walla Walla with 5-4 victory

07/11/2017 9:46 PM

Gresham, Ore. -- The Gresham GreyWolves clinched a series win for the first time in over a month with a 5-4 win against the visiting Walla Walla Sweets on Tuesday evening at Oslund Field in Gresham, Oregon.

The GreyWolves scored all five runs in the first two innings of action against Walla Walla starter Travis Ulvestad, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks.

In the first inning, Mike Peabody, who singled five times on Monday, opened the inning with a walk. He then stole second and third before scoring on a two-out wild pitch to give Gresham a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, it was another lead-off walk that started the scoring for the GreyWolves. Jackson Thoreson walked, R.J. Teijeiro singled, and Cole Weaver reached on an error to load the bases for Jordan Barchus, who doubled to left-center field to plate two. Peabody drove in a run with a groundout followed by a two-out, run-scoring hit off the bat of Alec de Watteville to push Gresham's lead to five.

Gresham starter Alex Roth kept the Sweets scoreless through the first six innings, but Walla Walla had plenty of chances. The Sweets had at least one runner in scoring position in each and every inning Roth pitched, but could not come through to score any runs through six.

In the fourth, the Sweets loaded the bases with one out but Roth induced an inning-ending double play to keep Walla Walla scoreless.

Roth came out for the seventh inning, but was replaced after allowing a walk and a double to start the frame. Ryan Mets relieved him but could not record an out, issuing a walk and a hit batsmen in addition to a walk. With three runs in and runners on the corners with nobody out, Gresham turned to Carter Buuck, who pitched around an error and limited to damage to just four runs to retain the GreyWolves' lead.

Buuck pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings and was helped by a diving grab in left field by Jake Palmer to open the final frame with an out instead of a double.

Roth (1-1) earned the win by allowing two runs in six innings on eight hits while striking out eight and walking two. Buuck recorded the final nine outs of the game to pick up his second save of the season.

The win seals Gresham's first series win since a series win in Kelowna on June 10 and is the first time the GreyWolves have won consecutive games since the same date.

Gresham has Wednesday and Thursday off before opening a three-game series against the Cowlitz Black Bears in Longview, Washington. The series versus Cowlitz is the final series before the All-Star Break. Zak Baayoun is the GreyWolves' lone representative in this year's All-Star Game.
