GreyWolves trounce Elks, take series with 11-4 victory

07/20/2017 9:57 PM

Bend, Ore. -- The Gresham GreyWolves defeated the Bend Elks 11-4 and won the series at Vince Genna Stadium on Thursday night in Bend, Oregon.

The game seemed destined for a pitcher's duel as both teams were scoreless through the first three innings. The Elks struck first with a run in the fourth inning on two hits, a hit batter and an error, but that'd be the only run that Gresham starter Zak Baayoun allowed.

The GreyWolves got that run back the next half inning in the top of the fifth when Mike Peabody singled in Cole Weaver with one out. After Baayoun threw a scoreless fifth, Gresham broke out the bats in the sixth inning. The GreyWolves scored six runs on six hits and the first four batters reached base safely. Gresham sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.

Gresham wasn't done yet, though. After Baayoun kept the Elks off the board in the sixth, the GreyWolves scored four more in the seventh. Again, the first four batters reached base and they all scored.

Baayoun threw a new season-high seven innings. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out six and walking none. Baayoun (2-1) earned the win for his efforts.

Three different GreyWolves (Peabody, Aaron Simpson, and Jason Drees) tallied three hits in Thursday's win and four others (Jackson Thoreson, Jackson Overlund, Tony Gudino, and Jordan Barchus) had two-hit games. Gresham recorded a new season-high 19 hits on Thursday, surpassing the previous season-high of 17 hits against the Wenatchee AppleSox on June 22.

The win clinches the series win for Gresham, the team's fourth of the season. The Corvallis Knights lost again on Thursday, but the Cowlitz Black Bears and Yakima Valley Pippins both won. Gresham is still in last place in the South Division, but only three games separate Gresham from first place.

On Friday, the GreyWolves can do something they have yet to do in 2017: sweep a three-game series. Gresham sends Andrew Hansen to the mound to go against Bend's ace Kris Jackson. The game starts at 6:35 p.m. and will be broadcast on
