Gresham drops rubber match to Victoria 9-6

07/24/2017 8:36 PM

Gresham, Ore. -- The Gresham GreyWolves lost the rubber match of the three-game series against the Victoria HarbourCats 9-6 on Monday night at Oslund Field in Gresham, Oregon.

Victoria wasted no time taking a lead in game three as they scored two unearned runs in the first inning against Gresham starter Alex Roth. A two-out error at third base by Jordan Barchus extended the inning and later a single by catcher Shane McGuire pushed across the first two runs of the game.

Victoria starter Matt Kent threw a perfect first inning, allowing his defense to add on. In the second, the HarbourCats scored two more runs on a couple of hits and a walk by Roth to take a 4-0 lead.

The GreyWolves got two runs back in the third inning when Jackson Overlund smacked a two-run, two-out double to left that scored Mike Peabody and Jake Palmer. That would be the closest the GreyWolves would get, though, as Victoria exploded for a five-run fifth inning, which started with a solo home run by Hunter Vansau. All runs in the inning were charged to Roth, who ultimately threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits while walking five and striking out four. Roth (2-2) took the loss in the series-finale loss.

Down 9-2, the GreyWolves began the comeback process when Palmer singled to open the fifth inning and Alec de Watteville followed with his fourth home run of the season. Gresham would get another run back in the seventh inning when Palmer crushed his first home run of the season to center field.

Down 9-5 entering the ninth inning, Gresham scored a single run and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but a groundout to second base ended the game with two runners on base.

With the loss, the GreyWolves lose the series against the HarbourCats and fall to 8-9 in the second half of the season. The Cowlitz Black Bears win on Monday and Gresham is now five games behind in the battle for first place in the South Division of the West Coast League.

The GreyWolves host the Walla Walla Sweets for one game on Tuesday before hitting the road to Corvallis for the final road series of the regular season. Tuesday's game will start at 6:35 p.m. and will be broadcast on mixlr.com/greywolves.
