GreyWolves fall to Elks 13-8 in game two

07/30/2017 7:39 PM

Gresham, Ore. -- The Gresham GreyWolves fell to the visiting Bend Elks 13-8 on Sunday evening at Oslund Field in Gresham, Oregon.

The GreyWolves struck first on Sunday after starter Brayden Bonner (who started because scheduled starter Zak Baayoun was sick) threw a scoreless top of the first and Ryan Novis drew an 11-pitch walk before Jackson Thoreson sent his second home run of the season over the right-field fence.

The Elks responded quickly, though, with four runs in the second inning off Bonner. That would be it for Bonner, who threw just two innings in the spot start. He allowed four runs (all earned) on four walks, two walks, and three strikeouts. Bonner (1-4) would take the loss in Gresham's defeat.

The Elks added on with two more runs in the third inning off reliever Christian Peters, but the big blow for Gresham came in the top half of the sixth inning. Still within striking distance down by four runs, Peters recorded the first two outs of the inning. Back-to-back ground balls were bobbled by Gresham infielders, extending the inning. Bend followed up the errors with two singles to push across two unearned runs.

Gresham responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 8-5, but if it weren't for the errors, the GreyWolves could have been within a single run.

Relieving Peters, Brad Danzeisen allowed five runs in the seventh inning and did not escape the inning. The Elks led the GreyWolves 13-5 at the time.

Alec de Watteville homered for the second-straight game on Sunday, a towering blast to left field in the eighth inning to cut Bend's lead to 13-7. Gresham added a run in the ninth when Novis singled in Mike Macove, but that'd be all for the GreyWolves.

The loss pushes Gresham to 9-14 in the second half of the season and the GreyWolves are now five games behind both Corvallis and Cowlitz with just four games remaining, meaning the GreyWolves are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

Gresham tries to salvage game three of the series against Bend on Monday at 6:35 p.m. The game will be broadcast on mixlr.com/greywolves.
