06/27/2017 9:43 PM

Walla Walla, Wash. -- The Gresham GreyWolves fell to the Walla Walla Sweets by a final score of 7-0 on Tuesday night in at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla, Washington.

In the first matchup between the two teams of the 2017 West Coast League season, the Sweets jumped out to an early lead with single runs in the first and second innings off Gresham starter Robert Reaser. The run in the first come on a first-pitch, lead-off home run off the bat of Garrett Mitchell, who was making his debut with the Sweets on Tuesday.

Mitchell, who was expected to be drafted in the first two rounds of the 2017 MLB Draft fell to the 14th round and did not sign to attend UCLA for a year, would not stop there. In the second inning, he drew a bases-loaded walk for his second RBI of the game. After a strikeout in the fourth, he legged out a double and eventually scored. In his final at-bat in the eighth inning, he tripled in two runs and was thrown out at the plate trying for an inside-the-park home run. Mitchell finished the night 3-4 with a home run, triple, double, four RBI, two runs scored and a single shy of the cycle.

Mitchell wasn't the only Sweet that finished a single leg shy of the cycle. Catcher Adam Kerner, who entered Tuesday hitless in 10 at-bats with six strikeouts this year, singled, doubled, and homered. He struck out in the eighth inning when he was a triple shy of the cycle.

Reaser (0-2) worked through seven innings but took the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits. He struck out 10 Sweets and walked two batters.

Gresham recorded just three hits all game long, including two off Walla Walla starter Dylan Riddle who threw five two-hit innings while not allowing a run, striking out three and walking one. Riddle (1-0) earned the win for his efforts. Three different relievers combined to allow no runs and just one hit in the final four innings of the game.

Gresham's R.J. Teijeiro (two hits) and Ryan Novis (one hit) were the only two GreyWolves to record hits. Jackson Overlund and Cole Weaver each drew a walk. Walla Walla pitching faced just three batters over the minimum after inducing a couple of double plays. The GreyWolves had one at-bat with a runner at third base and it was the final at-bat of the game.

Three hits tie a season-low for the GreyWolves and Tuesday marks the third time Gresham has been shutout in 2017. With the loss, the GreyWolves have lost three-straight games and are now seven games below .500 at 9-16. Gresham has two games left in the first half before the second half begins.

Gresham looks to even up the series in Walla Walla with another 7:05 p.m. game on Wednesday at Borleske Stadium. The game will be broadcast on mixlr.com/greywolves.
