Gresham drops first game of final series 9-8 in 11 innings

08/02/2017 9:16 PM

Gresham, Ore. -- After a day off on Tuesday, the Gresham GreyWolves welcomed in the Port Angeles Lefties for the final series of the 2017 regular season and lost 9-8 in an 11-inning thriller on Wednesday at Oslund Field in Gresham, Oregon.

After celebrating the team's host families with an on-field ceremony before the game, it looked like the GreyWolves cruise to victory. Gresham led from the start when Zak Baayoun threw a scoreless top half of the first inning and Mike Peabody opened to bottom of the first with a solo home run, his first of the year.

Baayoun then threw a scoreless second inning and Alec de Watteville gave him more run support by following up Drew Curtis' inning-opening double with a home run of his own, his seventh of the season (at the time a team-high).

After both teams were scoreless in the third inning, the Lefties scored five runs in the fourth off Baayoun, who was not able to record an out in the inning. Baayoun took a no decision after throwing three innings and allowing five runs (all earned) on five hits while striking out and walking three Lefties.

Gresham wouldn't go away lightly, either. The GreyWolves scored twice in the bottom half of the fourth inning, in what would be the first of three times Gresham tied the score in Wednesday's game. Port Angeles scored two more runs against Gresham reliever Brad Danzeisen in the fifth inning and it took the GreyWolves until the seventh inning to tie the score for a second time, when Curtis mashed his seventh home run (tying de Watteville's total) over the left-field fence.

Like before, right when Gresham tied the game, Port Angeles re-took the lead. In the eighth, the Lefties scored against Gresham's third pitcher of the game, Dakota Weindel, but the GreyWolves would come back for a third time.

Peabody, who finished a double shy of the cycle, tripled on the first pitch he saw to open the bottom of the eighth and Simpson, who finished Wednesday with three runs batted him in, scored him with a sacrifice fly to center.

Both teams stayed scoreless until the 11th inning when Jordan Ackerman hit a lead-off home run off Weindel to give his team another lead. Gresham would not have a fourth comeback in them as Palmer was left on base after singling to lead off the inning.

The win snaps the Lefties' eight-game losing streak and the loss is Gresham's fifth in six games. Game two of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
