GreyWolves drop final game of regular season 9-4 to Lefties

08/04/2017 8:11 PM

Gresham, Ore. -- The Gresham GreyWolves continued the series against the Port Angeles Lefties on Friday with a 9-4 loss at Oslund Field. The two teams were scheduled to play two seven inning games, but after game one concluded, coaches for both sides and umpires decided that the air quality made playing a second game too risky for the health of the players.

Gresham used a total of six pitchers in seven innings. Both teams scored a single run in the first inning. Gresham tied up the score at one when Alec de Watteville hit his team-leading eighth home run over the left-field fence.

Both teams would be scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Lefties scored four times, with three coming on a two-out, three-run home run by Mitchell Hagan.

The GreyWolves responded with three runs of their own in the sixth inning. Jackson Thoreson drove in Aaron Simpson with a triple and Tyler Parker drove in Drew Curtis with a sacrifice fly. Thoreson scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs.

Down by just one, Gresham turned to Washington State reliever Ryan Ward. With runners on first and second and two outs, Ward 2-1 pitch to Michael Ciancio missed outside. Both runners thought that the pitch was ball four and began to jog to the next bases.

Tony Gudino's throw bounced off third baseman Curtis' glove. Curtis picked up the ball and threw to second base, to try to throw out the back runner. The throw was wild and went to right field to Mike Peabody. His throw back to third base got past Curtis again, and both runs ended up scoring.

The Lefties would score two more times to push the lead to 9-4, the score in which the game would end on.

Gresham went scoreless in the ninth inning and dropped what turned out to be the final regular season game of the year. With the loss, the GreyWolves dropped to 10-16 in the second half and, after going 10-17 in the first half, 20-33 overall in the 2017 season.
