Gresham, Ore. -- The Gresham GreyWolves fell to the Corvallis Knights 7-6 on Sunday evening at Oslund Field in Gresham, Oregon, as the Knights finished off the three-game sweep of the GreyWolves.
The game was competitive throughout and unlike the first two games of the series, the GreyWolves scored first on Sunday. After Gresham starter Robert Reaser kept the Knights off the board in the top of the first, Ryan Novis sent a ball over the left-field fence in bottom of the first (his first home run of the year) to give Gresham an early 1-0 lead.
Corvallis scored a single run in each of the third and fourth innings off Reaser, of which only one was earned. A costly error at third by Jordan Barchus cost Gresham a run in the fourth inning and gave Corvallis a 2-1 lead.
The GreyWolves would not be fazed, though. In the fifth inning, Novis came through again for Gresham. After Aaron Simpson was hit by a pitch and Mike Peabody singled, Jake Cosgrove moved both runners over with a bunt to set things up for Novis. Novis singled to left and drove in Simpson and Peabody to once again give Gresham a lead.
Corvallis would respond, though. In the top of the sixth inning, Matt Kelly (who finished the day 4-5 with three runs scored) reached on an infield single. Reaser's next pitch was a hanging curveball that Gabe Matthews deposited into the trees beyond the right-field fence to give the Knights a 4-3 lead.
Reaser would strike out the next batter he faced before being replaced by Ryan Mets out of the bullpen. Reaser went 5 2/3 innings, allowed four runs (three earned), on five hits while striking out five and walking four. Reaser (0-3) suffered the loss in Gresham's defeat.
After both teams were scoreless for a few innings, the Knights added on in the eighth inning with three runs. One was charged to Mets and the other to reliever Brayden Bonner. Gresham would go scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to set things up for the ninth.
Carter Buuck, making his first appearance for the GreyWolves since June 9, put a zero on the board in the top of the ninth to keep it a 7-3 lead for Corvallis heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Jackson Thoreson singled to lead off. After Mike Macove struck out, pinch-hitter R.J. Teijeiro doubled to left field. A wild pitch scored Weaver (who had pinch ran for Thoreson) and moved Teijeiro to third base. Mike Peabody then flew out for the second out of the inning. Ross Puskarich then pinch hit for Jake Cosgrove a blooped a single to right, which scored Teijeiro. Jake Palmer came in to pinch run for Puskarich and he scored after Corvallis reliever Jordan Qsar threw three wild pitches in one at bat. Down by just one with Novis at the plate, a ground ball to third ended the game and closed out the sweep for the Knights.
Gresham has now been swept twice this season, both times at home. Since improving to 5-3 early in the year, the GreyWolves have lost 17 of their last 23 games played.
Sunday's game marks the end of the GreyWolves' first series of the second half. Gresham is 0-3 in the second half and 10-20 overall after a 10-17 first half. Corvallis' first half is now complete at 17-10.
Gresham has a day off on Monday before traveling north to Port Angeles to begin a three-game series against the Lefties which starts on the Fourth of July. All three games of the series will be broadcast on mixlr.com/greywolves.
